China Unicom VPN speed test - ExpressVPN vs StrongVPN vs VPN.ac vs VyprVPN

November 27, 2016

Long time, no official speed test, although I do often post speed test results on the VPN blog page. Today I am in Yulin, Guangxi province using a China Unicom 20M broadband internet connection. This is the first VPN speed test I have done using China Unicom ISP. Normally, I am using the China Telecom connection I have at home in Zhuhai, Guangdong province.

I will only post the results of the 2 best servers for Asia and the 2 best servers for USA for each VPN. You can click on each result to see the speedtest.net test record.

I am testing the same 3 VPNs that I recommend for China Telecom (ExpressVPN, VPN.ac, and StrongVPN) plus VyprVPN which doesn't work very with China Telecom but seems to work quite well with China Unicom.

All of these VPNs that I am testing today are available with a free trial or money back guarantee. Try them risk-free.

ExpressVPN - 30 day money back guarantee

StrongVPN - 5 day money back guarantee (15% discount on annual plan here)

VPN.ac - 7 day money back guarantee (coupon code here for 25% recurring discount)

VyprVPN - Your choice of a 3 day free trial or 30 day money back guarantee plus big discounts (not recommended for China Telecom)

Conclusions

With China Unicom, the congestion for VPN traffic at night is not nearly as bad as China Telecom. USA connections did slow down a bit at night but the connections to Asia are excellent at night with China Unicom, almost no slow down at all. I wish I had China Unicom available in my housing complex in Zhuhai, I would switch right away if I could.

Best server overall for China Unicom is VPN.ac Hong Kong 2. I can get the full 20M of the connection almost any time of day with a latency of 30ms from Guangxi province.
